Update on Alvin

Alvin, was adopted in March by an older couple in Alamo, CA and he was immediately lost that evening when he escaped from their fenced back yard. He was found the very next day in their neighbor’s yard and it was decided that Alvin would stay a bit longer in foster care with Carolyn Hestenes. Alvin is still with Carolyn and is going through training on some issues so the he can become a good canine citizen. We currently have one couple from Sacramento that is interested in Alvin.

Getting His First Haircut

History on Alvin

Alvin was rescued by Linda Luikens last Christmas, December 24, 2011. He was found abandoned at an apartment in Davis, California and we believe he was abandoned by his owner. Alvin was so badly matted that Linda had to shave him to the skin and his hair came off in whole clumps. His tail hair was intertwined with his leg hair and that was the reason he could not bring his tail up over his back and wag it. His nails were 3″- 4″ long. It’s amazing he could walk. We are certain he was in pain. We believe this was Alvin’s first grooming. Next, Linda took him to the vet and got him vaccinated and neutered.

Alvin is a calm dog and he gets along well with other Havanese. He is a little overweight. We believe that he lived his entire life in the apartment with no exercise. For more information about Alvin, contact Linda Luikens.

Our Past Rescues

“Honey,” Our First Rescue

picture of white havaneseThis is Honey, our first rescue.  She is the reason we rescue.  Honey was abandoned at the San Jose shelter at just 6 months old.  She had been severely abused and had use of only 3 legs.  Club member, Patte Hemple, saw her, rescued her, and took her to Linda Luikens.  Linda had Honey's legs Xrayed and the vet told her there was no surgery for Honey that would give her mobility in her bad leg.  Linda had her spayed, vaccinated, and gave her lots of love.  Honey lived with the Luikens family for well over a year before finding her the perfect home with Judy Lowe and Judy's dog, Skipper.

Abby and Libby

picture of two havanese dogs chasing each otherThese are Abby and Libby.  There were found at the Yuba County shelter and were rescued and fostered by club member, Carolyn Hestenes.  The two girls were puppy mill pups, surrendered to the shelter by the puppy mill.  Carolyn worked on socializing them and getting them free of parasites and getting them into good health.  Linda Luikens helped with transporting them and Gerry Maurer nursed them back to health after they were spayed.  They were adopted by members, Frank and Annie Hayes.  It was a joint club effort by club members with a "happy ever after" ending.
